Identify the surface first
Granite, marble, quartzite, engineered quartz and porcelain need different treatment. Include the supplier or product name if known, the finish, the age of the installation and what happened before the damage appeared. A stain, scratch, chip, crack and acid-etched patch are different problems.
Assess the cause as well as the appearance
A crack or movement around a joint may indicate an issue with support or installation. A cosmetic filling alone does not resolve an underlying structural problem. Repairs depend on the material, location and extent of the damage, and replacement may sometimes be the more suitable option.
Set realistic expectations
A professional repair may improve a small chip or blemish, but colour and texture matching can remain visible. Restoring an exact factory finish cannot be guaranteed. Avoid DIY sanding, machine polishing or generic repair kits, particularly on engineered quartz and porcelain, unless the manufacturer expressly approves the method.
Understand marble etching
Acidic products can etch marble and change its finish. This is different from a stain. Sealing can reduce absorption but does not prevent acid etching; ask a stone specialist to assess the affected area before applying treatments.
Care without unnecessary polishing
There is no universal requirement to polish a kitchen worktop every six or twelve months. Follow the instructions for the particular surface. Use suitable cleaners, chopping boards and trivets, wipe spills promptly and ask whether sealing is appropriate. The Natural Stone Institute’s care guidance provides further advice for natural stone.
